In what would be a rather surprising development, Bayern Munich might be compelled to sell Thiago Alcantara this summer. The 29-year-old’s contract expires in 2021 and while the Bavarian club are trying to extend it by a couple of years, progress has been slow on that front.
Thiago has been one of Bayern’s best players in recent seasons and he’s been often hailed as one of the best passing midfielders of this generation. While there have been no official bids for Thiago’s services, it’s hypothesized that Liverpool could be interested in the €60m-rated midfielder.
Thiago’s future wouldn’t have any direct bearing on Chelsea’s transfer plans this summer, but there could be a butterfly effect. According to Kicker, should Thiago leave Bayern Munich, the club might just have the funds necessary to pursue a move for Kai Havertz.

Bayern Munich’s interest in the mercurial Havertz is long-standing, even longer than Chelsea’s interest, but financial constraints have made it difficult for them to make a serious move. Their primary objective for the summer is Manchester City’s Leroy Sane, but if Thiago were to leave, the dynamics could change entirely.
From Chelsea’s perspective, Thiago staying at Bayern would be the favorable outcome at this point, but then again, with the unpredictability of the calciomercato, one can never know for certain. Time is of the essence here, and Chelsea need to strike fast and hard if we want to stay at the top of the race for King Kai.
On the other hand, Leverkusen wants to keep Havertz for another year even if they play Europa League next season, and so far there is no club that is willing to pay the required 100 million euros transfer fee [Bild]
