According to a report from ESPN, Arsenal have yet to offer a new contract to reported Chelsea target Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Aubameyang, nearly 31, has been Arsenal’s main goalscorer since his arrival at the Emirates in January 2018 from Borussia Dortmund (when Olivier Giroud moved to Chelsea and Michy Batshuayi was loaned to Dortmund, as part of the same circle of dominoes). Last season he shared the Premier League’s Golden Boot with Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah with 22 goals, and he is on track to repeat that total with 17 goals in 26 league matches thus far this season.
Despite these amazing numbers, Arsenal have yet to offer him a contract to keep him at the club beyond June 2021. Chelsea are said to be monitoring his situation, and probably enjoying the potential scenario in which the Gunners are forced to sell him at a discount just to avoid seeing him leave for free next summer.
While Chelsea themselves are not in the business of offering long-term contracts to players over 30 either either, the opportunity to get someone as prolific as Aubameyang would be quite hard to miss. However, we should probably not pay £40m for that to happen.
