According to a report from the Telegraph, Chelsea are taking a “wait and see” approach with Kai Havertz, hoping to see his current £90m (€100m) price tag drop by at least £20m.
With Bayern Munich reportedly not prioritizing the 21-year-old wonderkid’s signature at the moment, and neither Real Madrid nor Manchester United truly in the conversation (yet?), Chelsea do have some time to play this game. We’re apparently hoping that if Bayer Leverkusen miss out on Champions League qualification, they would be willing to lower their demands to closer to £70m, which is how much we’re prepared to pay for the generational talent.
The logic is a bit spurious — Leverkusen have already resigned themselves to Havertz leaving, this summer or next — but the Bundesliga season is almost over, so we don’t have to wait too long to find out if we have any hope of this actually happening. Leverkusen are currently in neck-to-neck battle with Borussia Mönchengladbach for fourth place in the league, separated by just a point or two with two games to go after today.
