While rumors around Marcos Alonso have gone cold in recent weeks, it would be unfair to assume that there isn’t potential interest out there for one of the Premier League’s most proficient goal-scoring defenders of recent times.
According to the Daily Mirror (via Daily Mail), one of those clubs could be Newcastle United. The report claims that the Toon have already held preliminary discussions with Chelsea and are now “pushing for a move”.
Newcastle 'in talks with Chelsea to sign Marcos Alonso in £26m deal' https://t.co/KU75nFe6RN

While Emerson is the more likely left back to leave Chelsea this summer, Juventus — who are the frontrunners for the Italian’s signature — are in a dire financial state and if the Old Lady can’t cough up the money, Chelsea could well try and offload Alonso instead. The 29-year-old is apparently available for £26m, which does seem like a fair valuation for a player of his level.
However, that might be quite a lot for a club like Newcastle. Even though left back is a priority position, any move for Alonso, who once played for Newcastle’s local rivals Sunderland, could hinge on the Saudi takeover going through. Unfortunately (or fortunately, if we’re looking at the moral compass), that takeover is looking more and more unlikely.
