Recent reports hinted that Ben Chilwell prefers a move to Chelsea over Manchester City thanks to Chelsea’s lack of a European competition ban. As it turns out, according to ESPN, City themselves are not “that keen” on Chilwell either, and are instead prioritizing other positions of need, especially a central defender.
Advantage Chelsea!
City have been in desperate need of a centre back since Vincent Kompany’s departure. John Stones has not been the answer, Nicolas Otamendi is not getting any younger, and Aymeric Laporte has only recently returned to action from his knee injury. Villarreal’s Pau Torres has been touted as one of the targets.
In addition to centre back, City also need to strengthen other positions due to the probable departures of João Cancelo and Leroy Sané, as well as the imminent farewell of the iconic David Silva after a decade of service.
So while City will probably continue to keep an eye on Chelsea’s pursuit of Chilwell, our path to acquiring the 23-year-old left back appears to be clear at the moment. And if Leicester City reduce their asking price, then we might just see a deal happen.
