Chelsea were just one of several clubs reportedly interested in Sergej Milinković-Savić, but that means we are now also just one of several clubs set to miss out on the Lazio midfielder.
As per Sky Italia and Fabrizio Romano (for Calciomercato) the 25 year-old is set to sign a new contract with the Biancocelesti extending his already long-term deal by another year, to 2024 (with a pay bump).
Though whether that will materially affect his valuation is questionable since Lazio’s asking price was already in the nine digits — and understandably so since Milinković-Savić’s quintessential mixture of physical prowess and technical nous makes him a unique footballer.
Lazio have also been one of the Serie A’s best teams in recent seasons, and they were just one point behind leaders Juventus when the season was interrupted. With Champions League football on tap, there’s little reason for SMS to leave and little reason for Lazio to sell.
While Milinković-Savić undoubtedly would make a great addition to Chelsea, just as he would to any team, midfield is not our greatest area of need either. Money is better spent elsewhere anyway at the moment.
