According to a report from Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf (via Inside Futbol), Ajax are confident they will be able to hold on to André Onana for another year, instead of bidding goodbye to the goalkeeper at the end of the season.
This comes just days after Onana’s own Instagram story was taken as not only a reaction to the Eredivisie canceling the 2019-20 season due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but as a goodbye to Ajax as well.
Onana has been subject to heavy interest from several clubs in Europe. Both Chelsea and Tottenham were reported to have already made an approach, though the 24-year-old may be keen on moving to Paris Saint-Germain instead. Barcelona, with whom he spent five years as youth player before heading to Ajax, are another team in the mix, with Onana leaving open that possibility earlier this month.
But despite the host of suitors, which also include AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund, Ajax don’t think they will get anyone to meet their £35m asking price, especially in light of the expected economic effects of the pandemic. And so, despite apparently promising to let him leave, Ajax might just end up keeping Onana for another season.
