Even though it’s been more than two months since the winter transfer window closed, the interest in Olivier Giroud has not waned — and certainly not after recently proving himself to still be quite useful!
Just as in January, two Italian clubs, Inter Milan and Lazio are seemingly in the driver’s seat for the Frenchman’s signature.
Reports from Corriere dello Sport (via Sport Witness) and Sky Sports Italia (via Sport Witness) shed some light on what is happening in the shadows as the 33 year-old enters the very end of his contract with Chelsea.
If the report from Rome-based CdS is to be believed, Lazio have already drawn up an initial 3-year contract with (gross) annual wages of €3.5m plus bonuses, which they will present to Giroud’s entourage in May. Giroud reportedly had an agreement in place to join Lazio last month already before the move fell through, which is making the Biancocelesti optimistic about their chances. An added enticement is Lazio’s first position in the Serie A table (seriously, not kidding!), which would make it easier to attract top players in the summer.
However, SS Lazio’s path to signing Giroud is not covered with roses as Sky Sports Italia report that Inter Milan are still ahead in the race to sign him. While there were some shenanigans involved from Don Antonio Conte’s club in signing the World Cup-winner in January, the absence of a transfer fee makes this move much more feasible for Stingy Inter Milan.
After starting the last four matches, Giroud is finally getting some much needed game-time this season but his separation from the Blues in the summer is a foregone conclusion. Before he goes to the club of his choice (who will be lucky to have him!), maybe he can help us win some matches and trophies first?
