Alex Telles has featured frequently in the Chelsea rumor mill in recent weeks, as the Blues attempt to strengthen at left back.
His relatively cheap €40 million release clause makes him an attractive proposition for any club, and it now looks like Chelsea may have some competition after all, no doubt to Telles’ agent’s delight.
Telles has reportedly rejected multiple attempts by his current club to extend his contract which expires in 2021, and instead of losing him on a free, Porto are thus expected to sell him to the highest bidder. Barcelona did acquire Junior Firpo last summer, but the 23-year-old has failed to impress in the 1100 or so minutes that he has played.
It’s worth noting that Barcelona’s high wage bill and recent expenditures in the transfer market, as well as focus on signing other players like Neymar, should mean that they will need to be prudent in the transfer market. Moreover, at Barca, Telles would need to compete with Jordi Alba, whereas at Chelsea, he would have a much greater chance of becoming the starting left back.
