According to a report from Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), AS Roma will ask Chelsea to renew the loan deal for right-back Davide Zappacosta for another season.
Zappacosta has been unable to showcase his skills at all since joining Roma on loan at the start of the season, picking up an immediate calf injury followed by a serious knee injury that’s kept him out ever since. He’s managed a grand total of 12 minutes of playtime for the Serie A side.
Given these unfortunate circumstances, Roma are apparently happy to try a redo, and give Zappacosta another shot at glory on loan. The Giallorossi had hinted at wanting to acquire the 27-year-old former Torino standout on a permanent basis when the current loan deal was struck, but given the nature of the injury, another temporary arrangement is a much safer option.
There’s little reason to think that Chelsea would put up much of a fight against this win-win deal. We have not missed Zappacosta at all, thanks to the rise of Reece James, and while we could always use a bit of depth, there’s plenty of talent in the ranks to fill that gap (or just keep using the versatile César Azpilicueta as needed).
