Alex Telles appears to be trying to engineer a move out of Porto — or at least get a better contract — and seeing as how he was once a transfer target for Chelsea, he’s been linked anew with the club recently.
But according to Goal, Chelsea could indeed take advantage of this situation and make an attempt to sign the left-back, especially if the expected top target at the position, Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell isn’t available (under contract through 2024) or is priced out (by either his £80 million price tag, or others like Manchester City swooping in).
The 27-year-old former Inter Milan and Galatasaray player is in his fourth season in Portugal, and has one and a half years left in his contract. That means Porto would still demand the full £40 million of the release clause, which is fairly standard practice whenever doing business with Primeira Liga sides anyway.
That said, Telles has not done much beyond the Portuguese League level to justify our potential investment in him, especially in a crucial position of need. Let’s hope Chilwell is available!
