Not sure what to make of this boldly headlined report yesterday from whatever ‘VoetbalNieuws’ may be (or their Dutch mirror, 'SoccerNews'), especially as the report itself doesn’t fully support the claim that Andre Onana “has agreed with Chelsea”.
Agreed what, a transfer? Highly unlikely at this stage.
Still, in the ennui of the Premier League winter break, this rumor has been intensifying rather freely, growing like an uncontrolled reaction. If this is Onana’s agent putting out the word, he’s doing a fine job.
Last week, Goal kicked things off in earnest by claiming that Onana believes Chelsea would be “the perfect place” for the next step in his career.
(There is a baseline assumption that the 23-year-old Cameroon international isn’t long for Ajax of course, but that seems like a pretty safe assumption to make.)
Yesterday, reports in France took that Goal piece and put a PSG twist on it. They have been pursuing the Ajax goalkeeper since the summer after all, but while they’re still in the running, now they don’t look favored. Le 10 Sport (not a great source) thus make PSG’s chances “very slim” for Onana. That line then morphs into “PSG chief Leonardo has received word that Onana is focusing everything on joining Chelsea” at Tribal Football (an even worse source) and “PSG director Leonardo has already been told that his club has no chance thanks to Chelsea” in the report linked at the top.
Repeating the same speculative claim won’t make it any more true, but it will make more believable. We’ve “won the battle”, haven’t you heard? So sorry, PSG, Barcelona, Spurs.
(We even have a couple guesses at a potential price, too, ranging from €40m to €60m!)
