There are very few elite goalkeepers in this world. Jan Oblak is one of them, one of the very best in fact. We had hoped Kepa Arrizabalaga would be in that conversation as well when we spent a world record amount on him at the start of last season — maybe not immediately, but surely soon — but that development does not appear to be on the cards, certainly not immediately, and possibly not very soon either. If anything, Kepa’s trending in the opposite direction.
Therefore, Chelsea are increasingly expected to be looking for ways to cut our losses on Kepa this summer. Willy Caballero, approximately 923 years old, has started the last four matches in all competitions, and is in goal once again tonight against Bayern.
So far, Chelsea have been linked mostly with uninspiring targets as potential replacements (or even competition) for Kepa, but according to Spanish TV, we could have our sights set on something much better.
El Chiringuito (via 101 Great Goals) claims that Chelsea want Oblak and are willing to pay €30m in addition to exchanging Kepa for him. If you’re keeping count, that would make Chelsea’s total cost on Oblak an eye-watering €110m.
Worth it? It just might be.
It should be noted that El Chiringuito are basically a tabloid in television form, not to mention that Atletico might have something to say about all this as well, so let’s not get too excited.
Oblak, 27, is under contract through 2023, with a release clause of €120m.
