While Chelsea did just agree the transfer of Hakim Ziyech, the mission to reinforce the wings may only be half-complete. Willian’s possible departure at the end of the season means that we may have to find another winger to join our ranks.
Chelsea have been linked with a number of names to fill that position, from everybody’s dream boy Jadon Sancho to less expensive names like Richarlison and Samuel Chukwueze and even cheap options like Jeremie Boga thanks to our buyback clause. According to Russian website Sport.ru (via Sports Witness), the latest to join the shortlist is Dutch international Quincy Promes. He’s the third Ajax player we have been linked to after Andre Onana and the incoming Hakim Ziyech, if anyone’s keeping count.
Quincy Promes re-joined Ajax just last summer and has a contract all the way until 2024. He has 15 goals and 5 assists in 24 games, which has put to bed some of the questions that were raised by his disappointing season at Sevilla last season. Prior to that, the former Ajax prospect spent four seasons in Russia, collecting 66 goals and 33 assists in 135 matches for Spartak Moscow.
It’s worth noting that Promes plays primarily on the left, which is where Willian has been playing this season (following Eden Hazard’s departure). With a lack of quality left wingers not named Jadon Sancho (Oyarzabal? Felipe Anderson? Richarlison? Boga? Zaha???), it’s understandable that Chelsea would explore possible options. However, Promes turned 28 recently and it’s a fair question to ask if it would be the wisest decision to go for an “older” winger who already flopped once in a top five league — and that is assuming that Ajax would be willing to let him go. Liverpool are also apparently interested, but it’s also difficult to see even them going for a player who’s as old as the “not-so-young-guns-anymore” Sadio Mané and Mohammed Salah.
