In Chelsea’s search for a new striker in January, Moussa Dembélé was seemingly one of our top priorities. Reportedly, we even offered €40 million for his services. However Olympique Lyonnais rejected the offer, and the Blues moved on to other targets — equally unsuccessfully.
Luckily (?) for us, Lyon will now be looking to sell the 23-year-old striker, who may not be having his best season, but has already proven himself as a player of excellent ability and eye for goal. That intention is not unexpected, but what is surprising that according to L’Equipe (via Sport Witness), this is a decision that will be independent of Lyon getting a Champions League spot — or failing to get, as it were, since they’re sitting ninth in Ligue 1, eight points out of third place at the moment.
In any case, Lyon have apparently already started looking for replacements. In the meantime, they will be hoping that Chelsea (or whoever) return for Dembélé — even if they may not be able to get the €40 million they rejected last month.
