Samuel Chukwueze was a name on the very edge of Chelsea’s January transfer market ... activity? Sure, let’s call it activity.

But the 20-year-old Villareal winger, named one of UEFA’s “50 for the future” last summer*, could be carving out a larger role for himself in the Chelsea rumor mill as we slowly head towards the end of the season — that is, unless Liverpool get to him first.

The Premier League champions-elect reportedly had a €35m bid rejected for the Nigeria international in January, with the Yellow Submarine holding our for his full buyout clause of €65m. With a contract good through 2023, they would’ve had no reason to rush a sale after all.

France Football (via GFFN) explain that Liverpool didn’t want to go higher than that since they’re already well-stocked, which could open opportunities for others.

Chelsea are of course “also watching”, as we do here at Monitoring FC. But with both Willian and Pedro set to depart at the end of the season as things stand, we’re going to have to do something eventually ... and we certainly could do worse than this extremely left-footed Human Highlight Package.

* Somehow no Chelsea youngster made that list in 2019. Reece James made the 2020 list, which was released just last month. Ethan Ampadu and Kepa Arrizabalaga both made the list in 2018.
