Willian was surprisingly dropped from the starting lineup for today’s match against Leicester City, and that will probably add some credence to this morning’s story from Spain, which claims that Barcelona “are close” to agreeing a deal with Willian for a summer move.
Willian’s into the final six months of his contract, which means he’s free to discuss and agree terms with other teams. He’s been repeatedly linked with Barcelona in recent years, including some (laughable) claims last month, but it’s not inconceivable that he’d agree to (finally) move there. While he’s always maintained that he wants to stay at Chelsea, if we cannot agree a contract extension, he’s going to have look for a different team. Barcelona would certainly not be a bad option!
It should be noted that his rumor comes from Madrid-based Marca’s frequent rumormonger José Félix Díaz, which doesn’t necessarily make it untrue, but it does draw into question its credibility. Still, it’s not the most outrageous claim, and thus a reasonably possible outcome.
