Marcos Alonso has now gone over three months without a single minute of action for Chelsea Football Club, with his future, at least in the most immediate term, thus surely lying away from Stamford Bridge.
Recently, Atlético Madrid have emerged as the most likely destination for the, as of yesterday, 30-year-old left back, and those reports have now been confirmed by Madrid-based Marca as well. An agreement over a loan move is apparently “close”, though this report also fails to specify whether that’s a 6-month or an 18-month arrangement, and whether any sort of buy-option is included or not.
Atlético head coach Diego Simeone was quizzed about this rumor yesterday, ahead of their match tomorrow against Getafe, but he smoothly sidestepped the question, as most managers would in similar circumstances.
“I am not talking about what is being said from the outside. I’m thinking about tomorrow’s game.”

Alonso has also been linked with Juventus, and a few others in the Serie A, but it looks like a (temporary) return home to Spain is the most likely outcome for this January.
