Chelsea’s cursory glances in the direction of Malmö’s Anel Ahmedhodžić are unlikely to turn into anything more serious. Then again, stranger things have happened in football, right, Papay Djilobodji?
While the 21-year-old’s asking price will be, in all likelihood, considerably less than more established defenders from the big leagues like José María Gímenez, Malmö reportedly still want a significant fee by their standards.
According to Swedish outlet Expressen, they want at least SEK 82.5m (€8.11m) for the center back. This would break the current club record of SEK 82.3m (then €7.8m), which they received when a certain Zlatan Ibrahimović moved to Ajax in 2001.
Other than Chelsea, PSV, Ajax and Atalanta are said to be interested in Ahmedhodžić, with the latter apparently even ready with an initial bid of SEK 70m (€6.9m).
Chelsea don’t appear to have concrete interest as yet, and if we did, we’d likely be targeting a role in the Loan Army. But if our scouts have indeed discovered something unique about him that would enable him to adapt rapidly to the Premier League, he could be a frugal option to strengthen our defense.
