Chelsea signing Bayern-lifer David Alaba has become a rumor mill staple over the course of 2020, as the 28-year-old (how is he still only 28!?) continues to run down his contract towards its expirations at the end of the season. It would appear that he’s either definitely not signing another extension, or he’s definitely playing some risky hardball.
Even amidst a Youth Revolution™, it wouldn’t need much explanation if we were to make a (free transfer) play for the world class defender, but it would appear that those growing rumors of potential January talks and, as per AS, a “strong bid” are rather misplaced.
We might have a solid business relationship with Alaba’s agent, Pini Zahavi, and with just six months left on his contract, Alaba would be able to solicit offers and enter talks with other teams at that point, but the latest reports in Germany are not sold on that possibility.
Sky Deutschland claim that neither Alaba’s camp (“no plans”) nor Chelsea themselves (“not a transfer target”) are interested. Their transfer “expert” puts the likelihood of nothing happening at 95%, for whatever that’s worth. (So you’re saying there is a chance?)
That said, just because we’ve already had reports covering the full gamut of potential outcomes, this story is still far from over. Unless Alaba signs an extension, his name will keep circulating, and being linked with all the big teams.
