Official: Accrington Stanley sign Jon Russell on loan from Chelsea

Second Blues youngster to join the Accy

Chelsea Academy midfielder Jon Russell has joined Accrington Stanley on a season-long loan, the League One side confirmed yesterday.

The 19-year-old will be the second Blues youngster to spend the season there, alongside Academy teammate Tariq Uwakwe.

The Hounslow-born youngster, who has been with Chelsea since the U-7 level and signed his first professional contract in 2017, is quite excited about the move and the challenge posed by non-youth football.

“It’s been in the air for quite a bit but I’m pleased that it’s done and I’m excited to get started. It’s a big step and I’ve always wanted to play men’s football, and I know it’s going to help me in my progression as a footballer and improve my career.

“The fans can expect a box-to-box midfielder who is good technically, I like to get goals and make things happen, and I always want to help the team. I spoke with Tariq to see how Accrington play and a bit about the club and it seems like it’s a good club, and he’s helped me a lot.”

The team have confirmed that Russell will wear the No.8 shirt, which goes to show the massive faith they have in him.

All the best then, Jon!
