Maatsen had risen to the fringes of the first-team last season, and even made his debut in last year’s League Cup third round match as a second-half substitute. He also made a bench appearances in the FA Cup as well as our very last match of last season, the defeat at Bayern Munich in the delayed Champions League Round of 16 second leg.
The 18-year-old joined Chelsea a couple years ago from PSV’s Academy and has been a mainstay in Chelsea’s youth sides since at U18, U19, and U23 levels. This will be his first loan though the second Chelsea player in just as many seasons to join Charlton Athletic after Conor Gallagher started last season there (though he ended up switching to Swansea City in January).
