N’Golo Kanté targets big year at Chelsea, but not entirely happy with Frank Lampard — report

Final season at Chelsea?

The media forces of darkness and not nice things have been pushing for N’Golo Kanté’s exit for a couple years now. First, there was “childhood dream” Real Madrid, then there was “Conte reunion” Inter Milan. Neither happened, but neither are going away, with Le Parisien wading in already, just a week after the latest transfer window’s closing.

They claim that Kanté’s relationship has “cooled” with Frank Lampard thanks to an off-field issue — N’Golo denied permission to miss training for a friend’s wedding — and the player’s entourage have redoubled their efforts to engineer his exit. And while there was not enough time to get that done in the last transfer window, they’re obviously already laying the seeds for the next one, when a transfer “will be easier to achieve”.

That all sounds rather tabloidian, and certainly doesn’t fit at all with the established status quo of Kanté being happy at Chelsea, with Lampard always talking about how important he is to the team (and overplaying him, even). The report does add that Kanté’s now focused on “a big year” with Chelsea after an injury-hit last 18 months, but the implication seems to be very much that it could be his last at the club.

Considering he will turn 30 this season and will be entering the last two years of his contract, that might actually turn out to be true.
