Current Bundesliga leaders RB Leipzig — check notes; yep! — are looking to make some strong moves in the January transfer market, including the impending arrival of former La Masia supertalent Dani Olmo, to help them push for a surprise dethroning of Bayern Munich.
Given their injuries in the first half of the season, they’re also said to be looking for defensive reinforcements, which apparently means that they still don’t want to give Ethan Ampadu too many minutes — the Chelsea loanee was on the bench, as usual, in the 3-1 win over Union Berlin last weekend as the teams returned from winter break.
One name mentioned today is Andreas Christensen, who rose to stardom during his two seasons on loan at Borussia Mönchengladbach, but hasn’t managed to truly stake a similar claim since returning to Chelsea two seasons ago. He faded badly from consideration under late period Conte, didn’t make it beyond Europa League duty under Sarri, and while he’s started the last 4 games under Lampard (all since the last rumors), he had played in just 3 of the previous 20. So even though at least one report from Denmark claimed recently that he remains happy enough at Chelsea, he will have just 2 years left on his contract at the end of the season. A few interesting decisions might have to be made.
Bild rate Christensen at €30m, which is apparently well within Leipzig’s wheelhouse, especially if they cash in on Dayot Upamecano and possibly Lukas Klostermann as well. They apparently might try a loan bid before the end of January as well for Christensen, though that’s surely a non-starter unless we’re about to pull some sort of major coup from out of the blue ourselves.
In any case, one to keep an eye on probably, especially as we get closer to the summer
