So that happened

Proving once again that you never know in football and cannot take anything for granted, Chelsea and Arsenal have reportedly come to an agreement over the transfer of David Luiz. The 32-year-old veteran center back signed a two-year contract extension just a couple months ago in May, and looked set to be an important part of Chelsea under Frank Lampard as well, but it turns out that won’t be the case at all.

The reported fee is the region of £8m — the Mail reports it as £7m — though it’s too early to rule out any additional performance-based add-ons and bonuses or whatnot. David Luiz will sign a two-year contract with Arsenal, just as he had with Chelsea.

All that’s left now are a few final formalities.

Just 24 hours ago, it was all quiet on the Chelsea transfer front. Now, as we gaze over the smoldering ruins through the wisps of smoke, we may be wondering how in the world did we get here once again. Everything seemed to be serene and happy throughout preseason, but clearly there had been some simmering tension underneath the surface to convince David Luiz to push for this move.

You never know.

One thing’s for sure however. David Luiz will probably not get a great reception when he comes back to Stamford Bridge wearing Arsenal red.
