Michy Batshuayi needed a spectacular preseason, and he did not have one. To be fair, none of the other strikers on the books did either, but it looks like we’ve hitched our wagon to Tammy Abraham, at least for now, while the steady veteran Olivier Giroud is always ready to step in if needed (and then establish himself as the starter as he often does).
So that leaves Michy as the third choice, which is not exactly a good place to be two months shy of your 26th birthday. These are supposed to be the start of his prime years after all!
Into that existential crisis steps the latest rumor from Gianluce Di Marzio — a name we haven’t heard much this summer thanks to our transfer ban and non-Italian new manager — who claims that Batshuayi has been added to AS Roma’s shopping list. Right now this sounds fairly tentative, but some of that might depend on the fate of Edin Dzeko, who may or may not be part of a game of transfer dominoes involving Mauro Icardi (Inter) and Gonzalo Higuain (Juventus), or some such.
Batshuayi was part of the dominoes that brought Giroud to Chelsea 18 months ago (and Aubameyang to Arsenal and Michy himself to BVB), so perhaps some sort of history will repeat itself.
