Marcin Bulka has officially joined Paris Saint-Germain today, after signing a pre-contract in May and letting his Chelsea contract expire at the end of June. The 19-year-old goalkeeper had joined Chelsea just three years ago and served as the third goalkeeper for much of last season, which amounted to just two bench appearances, in the first two rounds of the League Cup.

Bulka had impressed in preseason last summer, but the arrival of Kepa Arrizabalaga for a world record fee meant that opportunities were and probably would be very limited for the ambitious young man from Poland. Seeing the writing on the wall with clear eyes, Marcin was under no illusions that his situation would improve, giving several interviews to that effect throughout the season and even hinting recently that certain promises made by the club were not kept.
While it is a bit unfortunate to lose a talented player, Chelsea have pushed the boat out on Arrizabalaga and bet the club’s goalkeeping future on him. So far, that’s looking like an excellent choice. Of course you never know how things might turn out in the future. Some youngsters, like Nathan Baxter, are willing to wait and learn in the meantime. Bulka has chosen a different path, perhaps seeing the prospect of competing with Alphonse Areola a more viable path forward.
Good luck, kid!
