Marseille targeting Chelsea left back Baba Rahman with €5m bid — report

A bit of a forgotten man

I’m not quite sure how much trust to put into this report from Ghana Soccernet, which cites seemingly non-existent English sources, but Chelsea’s forgotten left back Baba Rahman has apparently been targeted by Olympique Marseille and they’re ready to test the waters with a €5m bid.

Baba’s currently on holidays after representing Ghana at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, coming full circle from an ACL tear suffered at the previous edition of the same tournament (then held in the winter), which had kept him out for most of the intervening 2.5 years. His comeback may not have been too smooth, but he finally found some semblance of success at Stade de Reims in the second half of last season, making eleven appearances after yet another unremarkable stint at Schalke 04.

Now, with just a year left on his original five-year contract, Baba’s time on Chelsea’s books could very well be coming to an end. The €5m fee may be just a small fraction of what Chelsea paid for the once highly regarded left back, then a rising star in the Bundesliga, but it’s better than nothing.

After all the bad hands dealt to Baba in the past few years, a fresh start somewhere on a permanent transfer would be the best thing for him as well. Might as well be Marseille.
