According to the Reading Chronicle, Chelsea youngster Ethan Ampadu already has at least one potential loan destination, local side Reading FC, where Lewis Baker and Matt Miazga spent time on loan last season, and who will face Chelsea later this preseason as well.
Earlier today, Chelsea head coach Frank Lampard confirmed plans to send the 18-year-old on loan for the first time. He wants Ampadu to play way more often than he did in the last two seasons, when he made only 20 senior appearances, including 8 for the Welsh national team.
Ideally, Ampadu would get plenty of playing time while still being challenged by his teammates and the strength of the opposition — and Reading should fit that bill. Miazga claimed he ‘learned a lot’ last season at the Madejski, as they successfully fought against relegation.
There could be a few concerns with sending a player as talented as Ampadu to a club that might be one of the weakest in the league, but one needs to only look at the huge success of Reece James at Wigan to see that a player grow tremendously in such adverse, under-fire conditions.
