According to the Daily Mail, forward Daishawn Redan is the latest Chelsea youngster to appear on the transfer radar of various Bundesliga clubs, in this case Mainz 05, Schalke 04, and Wolfsburg 03.
The 18-year-old arrived on a free transfer from Ajax Amsterdam two years ago, and has shown himself to be a capable goalscorer since, with 33 goals in all competitions, including 4 in 8 games against senior (lower league) professionals in the EFL Trophy. He was rewarded a three-year professional contract after turning 17 last year.
Obviously, Chelsea’s preference would be to sent Redan on loan, but that pathway is starting to fall out of favor both in terms of FIFA regulations (reducing the potential size of “loan armies” like Chelsea’s) and the preferences of youngsters like Redan. Talented kids like him are increasingly unwilling to bide their time simply on loan, hoping for a vague chance back at the parent team at some undetermined point in the future.
Redan does have two years left on his Chelsea contract, so there’s no immediate hurry to make drastic decisions. But with the German sides offering a permanent transfer and quicker first-team pathways, it will be a crucial summer for the kid from Amsterdam.
