WATCH: Willian fails miserably at keeping his poker face while answering Hazard question

Most of sports media is an exercise in reading far too much into utter banalities. Interviews with players or managers rarely turn up anything truly dramatic or noteworthy, especially in these modern times of PR-managed interviews and hardcore media training in the youth ranks. But obviously that doesn’t deter us, the fans, or the media from hanging on every syllable and the smallest intonation.

Now, in the age of video, we’re increasingly adding on another layer, how the answer was delivered. Words are only half the picture, literally. The full extent of human communication involves body language as well.

For example, here’s what Willian answered yesterday during media day at Cobham ahead of next Wednesday’s Europa League final in Baku when asked about Eden Hazard’s future and whether it will be the last game at Chelsea for him.

“It’s difficult to say (anything) about this situation because we do not know what is going to happen. But what I can say is if he goes, I am going to be very sad.”

Pretty standard answer.

Entirely non-standard delivery however with a massive Willian grin and laugh at the end. Flashing those pearly whites! So sad!

Was Willian smiling because he was tired after a long and it’s a silly question?

Was Willian smiling because it doesn’t matter what he says and it’s a silly question?

Was Willian smiling because that’s how he reacts in awkward situations and it’s a silly question?

Was Willian smiling because he was thinking of all the good times and laughs he’s had with Eden and it’s a silly question?

Was Willian smiling because he’s been taking tips from Eden on how to tease and be a little troll and it’s a silly question?

Was Willian smiling because of something else entirely and because it’s a silly question?

The answer is obviously yes. To all of them. To none of them. Maybe to one of them?

In any case, here’s a funny moment I just remembered from a few years ago. Slowly, they all leave us.
