Olivier Giroud’s unlikely to be short of suitors when the January transfer window opens in a month and a half. He may not be playing much for Chelsea, but he remains a big part of the French national team, where he continues to collect minutes and score goals at a regular clip — after last night’s penalty, he now has 8 goals since going famously goal-less in the 2018 World Cup, including 4 in the 5 Euro 2020 qualifiers since September.
Joining Serie A contenders Inter Milan with rumored interest are Bundesliga contenders Borussia Dortmund, who are currently languishing in sixth place but are only six points out of first (and only two points behind eventual winners Bayern Munich). That’s according to Bild (via BeSoccer), who claim that BVB are looking to reinforce their attack with a big name signing, and have shortlisted three candidates, Olivier Giroud, Zlatan Ibrahimović, and (possibly Manchester United-bound) Mario Mandžukić.
Zlatan is a free agent after leaving LA Galaxy recently, while both Giroud and Mandžukić have fallen down the pecking order at Chelsea and Juventus, respectively. All three would certainly qualify as a marquee signing, especially Ibrahimović, and would probably be able to help out Paco Alcácer and Marco Reus in carrying the goalscoring load for Lucien Favre’s men.
The recent Inter rumors put Giroud’s price tag in the €6-8m region, which BVB could surely afford. We’d give it all back to them with 1000% interest, if not more, for Jadon Sancho in the summer anyway, right?
