Emerson to consider Juventus option amid Chelsea contract talks — reports

More left back transfer rumors

Earlier today, Chelsea were linked with 22-year-old Leicester City left back Ben Chilwell, and while the England international is certainly one of the best at his position in the Premier League, the rumor didn’t quite make complete sense. Chelsea do have two highly paid, if at times highly limited, left wing-backs on the team, both signed through at least 2022 — or in Marcos Alonso’s case, 2023 — and young Ian Maatsen could very well develop into the next big thing out of the Academy.

But recent rumors out of Italy put the Chilwell story in a slightly different light. According to Fabrizio Romano, Juventus are hot on the heels of Emerson, who had beat out Alonso for the starting job towards the end of last season, but has been out for the past month or so after trying to come back too soon from an injury he picked up on international duty with Italy in September.

Romano also claims that while Chelsea have entered talks with the 25-year-old for a contract extension — his current deal expires in 2022 — he’s also considering the Juventus option. The Old Lady are looking for the successor of Alex Sandro still, a position for which Emerson was rumored once already, before he ended up signing with Chelsea.

Emerson had been talking about how much he’s enjoying his time at Chelsea these days (before the injury), but were he to depart back to Italy (next summer, by which time Chelsea would definitely be able to buy new players), the Chilwell rumors would take on greater significance.
