Chelsea recall Lewis Baker from Leeds United — reports

Another career gone south

Lewis Baker’s search for the next step in his once highly promising career goes on after the midfielder’s loan to Leeds United was cut short today by Chelsea. That’s according to Sky Sports and several others, including local sources like the Yorkshire Evening Post, with Baker on his way back to Chelsea ... for now anyway.

Baker is expected to head out on loan for the second-half of the season as well, with Reading apparently favorites for his services.

Baker’s time at Leeds began with plenty of promise and excitement, as he featured in seven of the first eight matches for the famous Marcelo Bielsa as Leeds climbed to the top of the table in the Championship.

But the 23-year-old played in just four of the next eighteen league games and is sitting on just 400 minutes total for the season. It’s a pattern not all that dissimilar from his season-long loan at Middlesbrough last season.

All-in-all, he’s failed to kick on from his successes in the Chelsea youth teams as well as Vitesse Arnhem a couple years ago, and is in dire need of consistent minutes. His Chelsea contract only runs out in 2022, but he will turn 24 before the end of the season and time’s running out for him to make the next step up...
