Kepa Arrizabalaga travels to Madrid to activate buyout clause — report

New, comments

Is it happening???

With less than 48 hours to go before the transfer window for Premier League clubs closes, Chelsea seems to have found their fifth gear. According to reports in Spain, Kepa Arrizabalaga had been on his way to Madrid (instead of simply making a wire transfer to La Liga) to pay his €80 million release clause and subsequently join Chelsea in the process, thereby making him the the world’s most expensive goalkeeper.

And now, we have video evidence of him arriving at the airport. So... it IS happening, huh?

That’s a crazy turn of momentum from the Blues there, as we’ve gone from spending four months on getting the Sarri deal done to taking less than a day to shortlist Kepa and pay his buyout clause. Funnily enough, we had also refused to break the transfer record for goalkeeper by spending €75 million on then Roma player Alisson, who joined Liverpool instead, just to spend €5 million more on the Spanish keeper.

And it doesn’t stop here. There are other reports from Spain which state that Thibaut Courtois will be announced by Real Madrid in the next few hours, probably once Kepa completes his Chelsea switch.

The Courtois transfer in turn should also unlock Mateo Kovacic’s transfer to Chelsea from Real Madrid. However, there is bad news on that front. If Arancha Rodriguez of Cadena Cope is to be believed, the Croatian’s move to Chelsea is a season-long loan with no option to buy.

All in all, this promises to be a highly entertaining end to a rather drab transfer window for the Blues. Time to get your popcorn ready!
