Less than three days to go until the transfer window SLAMS shut on Chelsea at 17:00 BST on Thursday, so it’s time to panic and despair and make some moves. These are the days when Panic Buy FC truly comes alive. Against all the odds, sometimes we even make some useful signings.
This could be one of them.
According to Real Madrid mouthpiece Marca — not always, but usually — Mateo Kovačić is “one step away” from going to loan to Chelsea for the season, with the two teams “about to reach” an agreement over the player that would satisfy all three sides:
- Kovačić, who may or may not be on strike, would get his wish to leave in search of more minutes
- Chelsea would gain a midfielder of a different profile than currently available in the squad, which was pinpointed by Sarri as a transfer wish
- Real Madrid would retain control of a player in whom they retain “blind faith”
This story is a follow-up to Marca’s reporting about Kovačić’s training adventures yesterday, wherein he trained then he didn’t or he didn’t then he did, by saying that he trained alone after the club informed him that they were working on the Chelsea deal.

As per the report, “the agreement between Real Madrid and Chelsea will be announced in the next few hours and Kovacic will head to London to embark on his new adventure.”
Even accounting for the inevitable delays and the ages-long medical, we won’t have to wait too long to find out whether this was true or just some preview of the madness to come in the next 2.5 days.
