After an amazing season on loan at Vitesse, it was expected that young Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount would generate plenty of interest in the loan market. So far we’ve had interest mostly from the Eredivisie, with Vitesse hoping to get him back for another year, and the league’s big boys, PSV and Ajax also registering interesting.
Now, here come Derby County, who these days are managed by Frank Lampard, who just so happens to be one of Mason’s idols and the player he’s been compared to quite often already.

Mount isn’t the first Chelsea player to be linked with Derby; Kasey Palmer, Tammy Abraham and Jay Dasilva have also been rumored to join. Frank Lampard is expected to use Chelsea’s extensive resources to help him get started, but they probably won’t all go there. Still, landing young Mason, who scored 14 goals and collected 9 assists in the Eredivisie, would be a tremendous boost for him. It would also help that Frank’s assistant, Jody Morris, already knows Mount from the U18s, where the midfielder served as captain while leading the team to the FA Youth Cup trophy in 2017.

The idea of Mount working under the tutelage of one of the best midfielders of his generation and one of the finest players ever to don the Chelsea jersey is of course great, even if a sideways move from the Eredivisie to the Championship isn’t one to immediately generate too much excitement.
Mount is still just 19 however, so perhaps a slightly “safer” loan could be a smart move. Let’s just hope his follow-up season to his Vitesse breakout goes a bit better than Lewis Baker’s.
