France are World Cup champions, thanks in no small part to N’Golo Kanté and Kylian Mbappé. Sure, it was a team effort, but the latter was the tournament’s breakout star and the former was surely in the running for best player before a subpar final took him out of that contention.
The two are also mentioned specifically since this story concerns them, and the latter’s friendly tapping-up attempts of the former. Naughty, naughty Kylian.
“It is true that [PSG’s] president consulted me. My response was that N’Golo would do our team some good.”
“I spoke with N’Golo during the World Cup. I was careful to not overdo it, though, as transfers can flood your mind.”
“In the end, I just put a few words in his pocket, which I am sure he must have discovered once he got home, to get the message across.”

Recommending Kanté as a potential signing doesn’t take too much scouting skill of course, but Mbappé has some time to figure out his post-playing career yet.
As to the matter at hand, this is unlikely to have much of an effect. Hopeful rumors out of France aside, Kanté isn’t pushing for a Chelsea exit and has repeatedly made it known that he’s not considering changing his mind in the foreseeable future.
Kanté is ours, and you can’t have him Kylian. But, if you want so badly to (continue) playing with him on the same team, just like at the World Cup, we’ve got a spare locker in the Chelsea dressing room with your name on it ... if you know what we mean.
