Premier League clubs are required to submit their official retained/released lists to the league by the third Sunday in May, which for some reason then takes two weeks to publish. Another caveat that makes them a bit less useful than they should be is the fact that most contracts do not actually expire until June 30, and there’s always a chance that a certain player will re-sign with the club anyway.
But for now, Chelsea’s “released list” contains nine (9!) names, eight youngsters and backup to the backup goalkeeper Eduardo. There were rumors earlier that Chelsea had tendered a contract offer to the 35-year-old who’s been with us for the last two seasons as the third goalkeeper, but for now, it appears that he’s on his way out.
Others on the released list include Matej Delac, who has been the longest serving Chelsea player (all loans) before finally securing a permanent move to AC Horsens in Denmark, which he will complete this summer, another goalkeeper in Mitchell Beeney (son of the Chelsea youth goalkeeper coach), former youth captain Jordan Houghton, and the right back who prompted many a Where’s Wallace? questions but no actual answers.
Chelsea didn't make an offer to either. Houghton is 22 and had carved out a strong League One career with prospects to keep rising, Liverpool think they can continue to develop Christie-Davies and the move came about from former Chelsea connections (no longer at Liverpool).— Chelsea Youth (@chelseayouth) June 8, 2018
Isaac Christie-Davis, Cole Dasilva (brother of Jay), Renedi Masampu, and Tushaun Walters complete the list — the latter two had only been in the Academy since last summer on short-term deals.
Matej Delac (25)
Mitchell Beeney (22)
Jordan Houghton (22)
Isaac Christie-Davis (21)
Cole Dasilva (19)
Renedi Masampu (18)
Tushaun Walters (18)
The retained list contains all the rest, including all the loan army and including what I can only assume is a typo or an oversight in Diego Costa.
