Rumours linking Thibaut Courtois to an exit from the club, mainly to join Real Madrid, have been floating around for a while now. The Chelsea first-choice goalkeeper has only one year left on his contract, and talks over a new deal did not make any progress back the last time they were on the agenda, in January.
Given that uncertainty, it’s only expected that Chelsea have been linked with several potential replacements, including Stoke City’s Jack Butland (ugh) and Roma’s Alisson (yay).
But one man who’s apparently “baffled” by all this is Courtois himself, apparently thinking (as per the Evening Standard) that those vague rumors of “talks” after the World Cup are enough to satisfy all parties. While that sounds preferable — Courtois is a known, world-class quantity, as shiny as Alisson may be — banking solely on similar talks to those that have been delayed repeatedly and bore no fruit in January is a bad plan.
So, yes. Please sit, talk and preferably, leave the room with a new contract. The less we have to worry over keeping our star players, the better. But Chelsea need to have a fallback, and preferably not of the Butland-kind.
