Former Juventus director hints at £70m Pjanic interest from Sarri’s Chelsea

Do tell

Are you ready for a hot one? Like seven inches from the midday Sun one?

Of course you are. After all, Chelsea’s summer has been filled mostly with non-action and waffling about the managerial position, which has run all the juicy transfer rumors right out of town. But with the Sarri saga seemingly, finally drawing to a close, we can get the rest of the rumor mill whirring again.

What wonderful silliness might it produce? How about Miralem Pjanic to Chelsea for £70m, a new club-record transfer? That’s a story from Corriere dello Sport (it’s that man Alfredo Pedulla again!), which was picked up by the Daily Mail and mostly ignored by everyone else, probably because Pjanic appears to be untouchable at Juventus, and if he isn’t, Barcelona are potentially there to offer him a starring role as the replacement for Andres Iniesta. Jobs in football don’t come much more glamorous than to be the conductor of Messi’s orchestra. Local reports seem quite convinced that this is happening, so Chelsea might just be getting thrown in for good measure, to keep this rumor good company. Gotta have three for good company (the third is a Juventus contract renewal).

But this rumor took a turn for fun late Wednesday, when former Juventus CEO Luciano Moggi decided to chime in on Twitter, seemingly hinting that Chelsea will be getting not only Maurizio Sarri but Pjanic as well. Since the Sarri deal is probably happening, the Pjanic hashtag gains legitimacy by association.

Moggi was the chief director of Juventus for over ten years, starting in the mid-90s until his disgraceful exit amid the Calciopoli scandal in 2006. These days he’s banned from football but is possibly still involved in football-adjacent activities, such as image rights management or marketing or Twitter-ITK-ing.

What might he know about current events at Juventus? Probably nothing. Possibly something? Maybe he’s just stirring the pot and having a good laugh. He might still have relevant contracts? Maybe he’s just being a troll, playing with people’s emotions. Or maybe he’s teasing something big.

That could be fun.

Pjanic was linked with Chelsea two years ago, at the start of the Conte Era, before eventually moving from Roma to Juventus (meanwhile Chelsea signed Rudiger and Nainggolan was the only one of the rumor-milled trio to stay). Pjanic has been a key member of the Old Lady ever since, and it’s unclear why he’d want to leave, unless Juve are making room for Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, which is hot rumor these days, too.

Reports indicate that Pjanic’s motivation might be financial. So, chances are this is all just a contract extension negotiation ploy for the 28-year-old, but until he signs on the dotted line somewhere, we can have ourselves a fun little transfer rumor instead.
