In his third season at Newcastle United, 24-year-old centre-back Jamaal Lascelles is garnering interest from top six clubs in England. In addition to his solid performances, his value has also been increased by his captaincy for the Magpies since 2016 despite his young age.
Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have been leading the chase, reportedly, as both club need replacements for veterans such as Gary Cahill, David Luiz, or Toby Alderweireld. However it seems that not only would either club have a tough time negotiating a potential fee, Lascelles himself is unlikely to want to want to leave Newcastle at this juncture.
“This is the happiest I’ve been. I’m playing week in, week out. And I’m the captain here, the fans love me, and I’ve got a good relationship with them because I love them. And we’re doing well, too.”
“I’m very happy here. You hear things, you hear rumours and stuff, but I’m a young player and I need to be playing football at a good club - and that’s what this is.”
“Overall it’s been an unreal season as far as I’m concerned, both for me personally, and more importantly for the club.”
“This is the right club for me at the right time. We have a huge fanbase, an amazing manager, and this club is massive. It has so much history. As captain, I want to see how far we can go - and potentially take it back to where it belongs.”

At just 24 and a with five years left on the long-term deal he signed back in October, it’s entirely unsurprising that Lascelles would not want to move this summer. Give him a couple more years however, and he will perhaps change his tune.
Until then, there are plenty of other potential signings out there with whom we could bolster the defensive ranks.
