Transfer rumors are often nothing but ploys by agents to fatten their own and their clients’ checks during contract negotiations. As one of the richest teams in the world, Chelsea are constantly used as part of the ploy. By attributing interest to the Blues, the agent can thus play them against the current of any other interest clubs.
For example, back in the summer of 2016, Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly went through these motions before putting pen to paper to a new contract.
Now, it could very well be Koulibaly’s boss’s turn, with Napoli head coach Maurizio Sarri starting negotiations over a new contract just a couple days after rumors strongly suggested that Chelsea want him as Conte’s successor.
“I can’t meet anyone on Friday, as we have a game on Saturday. I want to focus on other issues right now, so someone will meet with the president over the next few days and listen to the [contract renewal] proposal on my behalf. There’s no problem between Aurelio and I, so it’s not an issue.”
