According to Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, both Rome-based Serie A clubs, AS Roma and Lazio are keen on adding Chelsea right back Davide Zappacosta to their squad in the upcoming transfer window. Both clubs are apparently looking for a loan deal, possibly with an option to buy, for a player deemed not exactly indispensable at Chelsea.
While Lazio are going strong in the current campaign and challenging for the top four, Roma have been highly disappointing after last year’s third place finish in the league and Champions League semifinal. Current coach Eusebio Di Francesco is barely hanging on to his job by a thread, with rumours saying that he could be replaced by former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte. Conte has said that he will take the rest of the year off and start anew in the summer, but the rumor mill ain’t going to be concerned with such minor details — and it’s not like Zappacosta going to Roma is going to make him reconsider.
All that said, it’s still unlikely that such a deal would happen. Zappacosta may not be playing much, but he still seems more trusted than Emerson as far as backup full backs are concerned. So unless we’re able to bring in someone else — it is semi-tragic irony that young Ola Aina is earning rave reviews as a Zappacosta-replacement at Zappacosta’s former club, Torino — we cannot afford to lose Plan B, even if that Plan B is only Davide Zappacosta.
