According to Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), Chelsea and Arsenal have been admiring young AS Roma forward Cengiz Ünder, who also may be involved in contract negotiations with his current club, which is just how these sorts of rumors tend to go.
The 21-year-old arrived at Roma from Turkish club Başakşehir last season in a €13.4 million transfer, but especially since January of this year, his career has taken off at Stadio Olimpico.
Our friends at SB Nation’s AS Roma blog, Chiesa di Totti have compared him to both Dele Alli and Mohamed Salah with his style of play — playing mostly on the right wing, although he can also deputise on the left flank and as a central attacking midfielder.
The issue is, and this is also not exactly unique, that he would not exactly be cheap with 3.5 years left on his current deal and with Roma having learned their lessons with letting the likes of Salah and Rüdiger go for reasonable fees. In fact, they are hoping that any new contract he might sign would include a €50+ million release clause.
Ünder’s 11 goals and 7 assists in 48 career games for Roma aren’t all that impressive, but he is showing the promise of greater things to come. Any transfer fee would have to take that into account, though whether he’ll live up to the hype obviously remains to be seen.
Chelsea do need to get younger in attack, with or without Callum Hudson-Odoi, too, so links with the likes of Ünder and Pulisic will surely dominate as we head into January and then especially the summer.
