Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck has declared loud and clear the club’s intent to not lose Eden Hazard to Real Madrid, stressing that the club will do anything and everything that has to be done in order to keep him around beyond just this season.
Speaking at a “future of football” event in Doha, Buck’s confirmation is one of the rare times anybody at Chelsea has ever addressed a transfer rumor or situation directly in the Abramovich era. That’s how important this is to the future of our football.
“Every Chelsea fan in London and around the world loves Eden Hazard, and he’s not only a great footballer but I think he’s a wonderful lad. We want him to stay and we will do what we have to do to entice him to stay.”

Hazard recently revealed that while he was happy to stay this summer, he’s truly undecided about his long-term future and just how much he wants to pursue his Real Madrid dream. At age 27, he’s in his prime and time may be running out in that regard. Real Madrid, for their part, don’t seem to be all that set on Hazard either, though such situations tend to be fluid and circumstances can often change rapidly.
Regardless of whether it’s financial (record wages!), competitive (record signings!), or some other intangible thing (record all the things!) that will convince Hazard to stay, hopefully Chelsea can figure it out and get him to commit to what is likely to be the last major long-term contract of his career, and help him etch his legend into the foundations of the new Stamford Bridge.
