Thursday saw the legitimization of a rumor started by The Sun, when it was put to David Moyes after West Ham’s 1-1 draw (haha!) with Tottenham at Wembley on Spursday night that his backup striker Andy Carroll is supposedly on Chelsea’s shortlist for January. Moyes’s answer? Bemusement.
“I have no idea about that. I couldn’t tell you one way or another.”
-David Moyes
You can see him answer and shake his head at the 3:25 mark of this video of his post-match press conference.
That response doesn’t mean much in terms of the rumor mill. After all, the Sun’s nonsense is that Conte is ‘considering’ this option, which actually makes some sense in terms of looking for a backup to Morata — if there is one thing Carroll’s good at, it’s heading the ball! — though whether Conte could trust Carroll over Batshuayi isn’t exactly a given.
Carroll, who will turn 29 this weekend, has recently talked about his frustrations at being just a backup at West Ham — “I don’t want to be an impact player coming off the bench” — which, combined with his contract expiring in 18 months is likely serving as impetus for this rumor. Of course, Carroll would be nothing more than a backup at Chelsea, too, and that would make this extra silly for all involved.
