Over at the Parisian field of dreams, Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani is finding himself at the losing end of the battle against €222m-signing Neymar over free kick and penalty taking duties, which sounds like a silly thing but is apparently a very real thing.
For Cavani, it’s also just the latest situation were he has to play second fiddle, or perhaps even third fiddle these days. He was only free for a year from Zlatan’s shadow, only now to have to do that dirty work while Neymar and Kylian Mbappe bask in the adoration and plaudits.
Predictably this developing bad environment is leading to Cavani exit rumours as Silly Season starts slowly turning in the background of the actual football season. The Daily Mail have drawn up a lost interested teams, which includes Chelsea as well as Everton, Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan, Juventus and Napoli.
With that many names supposedly in the hunt, it’s likely that Cavani’s agent is simply gauging interest at this point. But with PSG looking to meet Financial Fair Play targets before the end of the season, Cavani and his £120,000 net weekly wages (currently until 2020) could be making way to at least create the illusion of the team balancing their books. At 30 years of age, the former Napoli superstar could have one big move left in him.
Unfortunately, due to that age, and especially at the transfer fee it would take, that club is unlikely to be Chelsea (ed.note: ultimate sadface). And if Cavani’s looking to be a featured forward at this stage in his career, that’s unlikely to happen at Chelsea with Morata looking to lock that down for many years to come and youngsters Batshuayi and Abraham possibly looking to challenge that this year or beyond. There was a time when Cavani to Chelsea would’ve been amazing and perfect. Alas, that ship has sailed for good.
