Chelsea signed 10 players, sold 12, and sent 33 on loan (so far)

Chelsea summer transfer window review

The transfer window has SLAMMED shut. Now we survey the wreckage.

Over three months of near constant transfer rumor mongering is now over and we get to take a brief break. (Here is the full record of all that in our transfer rumor tracker.) Probably at least 48 hours shall pass before the first transfer rumor for January drops — although we already heard of Chelsea wanting to make another pass at Ross “cold feet” Barkley in January, so there may not be any respite from the never-ending deluge of clickbait.

Chelsea came into the summer with the primary goal of improving squad depth. We mostly failed at that goal despite spending the second-most money of any Premier League team (almost £200m) though we also sold over £100m worth of players, and that’s not yet including Diego Costa who’s bound to fetch a pretty penny against all odds.

But despite that failure, Chelsea did sign several quality players while getting younger and possibly better man-for-man. There’s a glaring lack of depth behind Marcos Alonso at the moment (Kenedy is left wing-back only in name and Baba Rahman won’t be contributing anytime soon — any other option is a hope-for-the-best sort of scenario), but the team looks strong in midfield, in central defense, and in attack, with multiple options and tactical setups available to Conte.
