The 21-year-old has been at Chelsea since he was an Under-8 and had half-season loan spells at Gillingham and Plymouth Argyle before joining Doncaster last season. His loan to the Rovers was initially half-season long as well, but he established himself as one of their best players and earned a well-deserved extension to his loan deal. Unfortunately, his season was ended by a knee injury in late February. Houghton's contribution towards Rovers' eventual promotion to League One can not be undermined however, and it is why discussions for his return were in place since the end of last season.
Houghton's status as a first-team prospect for Chelsea may have diminished over the years but he remains well capable of working his way up the English football ladder, as he's doing now. Good luck, Jordan!
